Make Money From Home – Is Coaching Right for You?

Coaching is a collaborative process between a coach and a client. It involves facilitating personal self-discovery and growth in an individual through active listening, asking questions, and providing accountability. It is usually delivered one-on-one and tailored to that individual’s specific needs. The coach approaches the relationship with the belief that the client has all the skills to succeed and by listening and asking questions, the coach can help the client draw the right solutions out of him- or herself.

A coaching relationship starts with a goal or aspiration. During the coaching process, the client is responsible for generating ideas and possible solutions, taking action, and reporting progress. The coach keeps the client focused on a clearly defined goal, facilitates the client’s thinking, keeps track of progress, and delivers constructive feedback.

For coaching to work, the client must take personal responsibility for his or her success. A coach will help the client uncover fears and limiting beliefs, challenge his or her thinking, and create an action plan, but it is up to the client to take action. The coach does not offer advice on specific matters, make judgments about “right” solutions, or implement the action plan. Rather, the coach asks questions to help the client decide what is most important, what he or she wants most, and what he or she is willing to do to achieve that goal.

Coaching is not mentoring. Mentoring involves a more senior person who advises and shares his experiences with a junior associate within the same field. A coach doesn’t have to be senior to, in the same industry, or provide advice from experience to the client.

Coaching is also not counseling or therapy. Therapy usually focuses on uncovering the origins of emotional problems, is done by a licensed therapist or psychologist, and is similar to a traditional doctor-patient relationship. A coach focuses on future results, does not have to be formally trained, and builds a long-term relationship based on mutual respect and good communication.

Why start a coaching business

Coaching allow you the freedom to decide which clients to work with and how you will manage your time. Because you work regularly with clients, it isn’t as lonely as starting a freelance business.

In addition, you will facilitate positive change in your clients’ lives. It is personally satisfying to watch others achieve their goals, develop confidence to succeed or solve pressing problems because of you.

Coaching has become popular as people recognize they want to improve their lives. However, not everyone is coachable. Look for clients who:

  1. Have at least one goal they want help achieving and feel working with a coach can benefit them.
  2. They are committed to take action to achieve that goal.
  3. They are open to exploring alternative avenues to achieve that goal.
  4. They will actively participate in the coach/client relationship and allow the coach to hold them accountable.

A good coach is passionate about helping people achieve their goals through the process of self-discovery. If you like facilitating change in others, coaching may be right for you.
