Consulting is an easy way to make money from home. It offers flexible hours, high pay, and the ability to take on the clients and types of work you enjoy. If you are thinking about starting a consulting business, here are four tips to success.
- Look for clients motivated to change. It is virtually impossible to logically convince someone to change if they don’t want to. Many prospects will contact you for a “quick-fix” solution but won’t be willing to make the necessary behavior changes to achieve their goals. Look for clients who have clearly defined goals or projects, already have a time line and budget, and are willing to consider potential solutions and constructive feedback.
- Look for performance gaps. The best clients are clear about where they currently are and where they want to be. They have set goals and recognize they need help closing that gap. When evaluating clients, look at what is preventing them from success. Do they lack knowledge, skills or abilities? Do they lack motivation? Do they have the necessary resources to close the gap? Is closing this gap a priority for them?
- Be passionate, motivational and inspirational. Making systematic change in an organization isn’t as simple as giving people a fact-oriented how-to process. You not only have to give them the skills to succeed but motivate them to do so and inspire the confidence in them that they can do this.
- Focus on listening and asking questions. Part of your job as a consultant is to listen for the real problems and reasons why your client hasn’t achieved his goal. Actively listen and seek to understand your client. Is the problem really what the client thinks it is? What has prevented him or her from solving this problem in the past? Has he or she tried other approaches or solutions to fix it? Why didn’t they work?
Success in consulting requires being able to effectively change others’ behaviors. It’s not an easy task, but it can be extremely rewarding and highly lucrative.
